Australia's New Legislations set for
Hot Water Bottles and Children's Portable Folding Cots
Australia has recently published new
regulations and safety standards for the captioned products:
1. Trade Practices (Consumer Product
Safety Standard) (Hot Water Bottles) Regulations 2008, and
2. Consumer Protection Notice
No. 4 of 2008, Consumer product safety standard for Children's Portable
Folding Cots
Hot Water Bottles:
The purpose of the Regulations is
to set out a safety standard for hot water bottles to reduce the risk
of death or injury (particularly to the elderly) caused by those bottles
bursting or leaking. The Regulations adopt and make mandatory a number
of significant requirements drawn from the British Standard BS 1970:2006,
which deals with their physical properties (such as the thickness of the
material from which they are constructed), their performance when subjected
to tests for strength and leakage, and labelling to provide consumers
relevant information concerning their usage. The Regulations apply to
all hot water bottles manufactured in or imported into Australia on or
after 1 June 2008.
Children's Portable Folding Cots:
The Requirements adopt Australian
Standard AS/NZS 2195:1999, Folding Cots - Safety requirements, published
by Standards Australia on 15 November 1999 with variations. In order to
allow a reasonable period of time for suppliers to ensure that all stock
complies with the new safety standard, the effective date will be March
1, 2009.
