Designers from Hong Kong and Austria will be able to share their experience
and exchange their professional knowledge at the Austrian Design Exhibition on
16 to 20 June, the first exhibition to be held on the site of the Hong Kong
Convention and Exhibition Centre Extension.
The event is jointly organised by Hong Kong Trade Development Council, the
Austrian Design Institute and the Austrian Trade Commission to promote design
services as well as business relations between Hong Kong and Austria.
TDC's assistant executive director of design, Mr Christopher Chow, said
design is an integral part of many industries, especially the product, graphics,
fashion and interior sectors. "Good design can add marketability to a
product," he said.
Mr Chow said the Austrian Design Exhibition provides a chance for visitors
to see the most update design from Austria and can act as a forum for local
designs and their overseas counterparts.
He said Hong Kong is an ideal venue for such an international design
exhibition, being an important innovative product and service provider in Asia.
"Hong Kong is a major business hub in Asia as well as a melting pot of
East and West," he said.
"Creativity and the ability to adapt and quickly learn news skills have
helped Hong Kong develop into a regional design centre. Our designers can
provide high-quality, creative and internationally marketable design ideas,"
he added.
The Austrian Design Exhibition is organised with the support from the
Austrian Federal Ministry of Education and Culture, the Austrian Federal
Chancellery - Arts Department, the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber, the Vienna
Representative Office and Lauda Air.
The exhibition will feature works of distinctive Austrian product and
graphic design. It will be held in Atrium 1 of the HKCEC and open to the public
free of charge. Among highlights of the product design are a television set
designed by Porsche Design and binoculars from Swarowski.
In conjunction with the exhibition, an Austrian Hong Kong Design Seminar
will be held on 16 June in which designers from Hong Kong and Austria will share
their views on design services.
Mr Chow added that promoting Hong Kong's strengths in design services is one
of the TDC's eight key themes on services promotion in the coming years.
Other themes are promoting Hong Kong as a regional base, licensing and
sourcing centre, design and marketing centre, infrastructure integrator,
entertainment distribution centre, financial centre, communications hub and
logistics centre.
