Visitors to the Hong Kong Book Fair will have even more to choose from this
year. In addition to the ever-popular display of books and magazines, the fair
is offering a string of exciting new attractions.
Organised by the Trade Development Council, the event will run from July 20-25
and is expected to draw the usual crowds of eager readers.
Around 400 publishers are displaying their books and magazines, covering subjects
such as history, philosophy, technology, business, travel, religion, practical
skills, children's literature and others.
Some 12 countries are taking part in the "International Cultural Village"
pavilion, which will feature the latest titles from France, Denmark, Spain,
Poland, Belgium, Canada, Egypt, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand
and Vietnam.
France will have its own special event, called "French Cultural Day"
on July 24, featuring seminars and activities to highlight the country's literature
and culture.
Well known writers from Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland and Taiwan will be
speaking at a conference titled "Exploring the New Frontiers of Writing"
and a series of "Renowned Author Seminars".
Visitors to these seminars will have the rare opportunity of meeting and hearing
insights from famous writers such as Lung Ying-tai, Su Tong, Nan Fang-shuo and
Chan Koon-chung.
The Arts Centre and the Wanchai District Council have joined forces with the
TDC to stage a series of special exhibitions. These include "Literature
& Film Crossover", "Wanchai Cultural Map" which features
Wanchai's historical architecture, and "New Reading Space Project"
which displays the artwork of local designers.
TDC's Assistant Executive Director, Mr. Benjamin Chau, points out that record
number of visitors have been turning up to the fair year after year, reflecting
the event's popularity.
"This year's fair, with its new look, is expected to be another strong
crowd-puller for booklovers", he said.
Other fair highlights:
- Opening of "Children's Paradise", a pavilion for children's
readings, on July 20 by President of Legco Mrs. Rita Fan.
- Asian Publishing Conference on July 22.
- Forum on "Chinese Literature in the 21st Century" on July
23, organised by the Arts Development Council. Prof Yu Tien-tsung, Ms Li
Zi-shu, Prof Ge Hong-bing and Prof. Huang Zi-ping will be speaking at
the forum.
- Graham Earnshaw, who translated Louis Cha's "The Book & The Sword",
will be on hand to meet visitors on July 23.
- Children's Theme Day on July 23. Special events will be held at
the fair's Family Corner to encourage parents and children to enjoy
reading together.
- Vice Chancellor of Hong Kong Polytechnic University Prof Poon Chung-kwong
will give a talk on Management on July 24.
- Seminar titled "Reading Summer" organised by Hong Kong
EdCity on July 24
- Roadshows organised by the TDC at MTR stations (July 8-10 at Tai
Koo; July 14-16 at Kowloon Bay) to promote the fair. New books and selected
entries of "Book Critics" will be on display.
The fair will be open from 10:00am - 10:00 pm each day, except on the first
day (July 20) when it will open one hour earlier at 9:00am, on July 23 when
it will open until midnight, and on the last day (July 25) when it will close
at 6:00 pm.
Tickets are available at selected 7-Eleven stores and at Hong Kong Ticketing.
Prices are HK$ 20 for adults and HK$ 10 for children. Tickets for night bookmart
(HK$10) will be sold at the fairground after 6:00pm. Free admission for children
under 3 and senior citizens over 65.
