Masterwin Group Ltd's metal or crystal desk quartz clocks also serve as delicate decorations |
Miniature table clocks have long been hot-selling items that are equally popular as corporate gifts. Their timeless appeal is further boosted by innovative designs that make them steady sellers all year round.
Hong Kong manufacturer Carich Time Ltd, for example, produces crystal mini clocks designed with novel features that sales manager Pearl Yeung claims make them attractive ornaments.
"We have many different and original shapes and designs," Yeung reveals. "Our prices are highly competitive but the clocks look extremely expensive, which is why they are so popular as corporate gifts."
The ISO 9001-certified company manufactures 500,000 watches and clocks a month at a 1,000-worker factory on the Chinese mainland. "Our wide range of designs includes clocks made of alloy, brass, stainless steel and porcelain," notes Yeung.
Minimum order size is 500 pieces delivered within 35-45 days to markets worldwide, although Asia is becoming increasingly important to the 21-year-old company.
Yeung says Carich presently supplies about 3,000 clocks a month to Asia and is seeking to expand the regional market. "We market our products at trade fairs around the world and by advertising in trade magazines," she adds.
Equally ambitious is Artfield Mfg Co Ltd, which boasts five mainland plants in Shenzhen that provide 21,978 square metres of production space and employ 2,000 workers.
"We place strong emphasis on product design and development," says deputy manager, marketing Europe, Michelle Young. "An in-house design team produces innovative styles for customers and there is strict quality control throughout our production process."
The 19-year-old firm manufactures 300,000 timers, weather stations, jewellery boxes and clocks a month for consumers in markets all around the world. "Our major markets are the US, the UK, Germany and Japan, although we are expanding on the mainland," Young says.
Typical of Artfield's output are metal miniature travel alarm clocks, wooden desk models with acrylic panels and glass desk clocks with alarm that sell for US$4-5 FOB Hong Kong. "A minimum order value of US$5,000 is delivered in 30-60 days, depending on materials used," Young adds.
The emphasis at Wing Fung Metals Works Mfy is firmly on product research and development. "We have 300 staff and advanced facilities in our 2,000-square-metre factory in Guangdong Province on the mainland," explains general manager Benson Yip.
Wing Fung uses zinc alloy and brass to produce clocks, key chains, watches and desktop accessories. "Our products are entirely for export and are mainly OEM," notes Yip.
He says the seven-year-old firm has a "strong base" of regular customers in the US and Europe and recently gained some new customers in the Middle East and Algeria.
Wing Fung's minimum order is 500 pieces and delivery is within 40 days. "FOB Hong Kong prices vary because of the wide range of designs, but will be within US$1.50-12," says Yip.
Man Nin Shing Co Ltd is a far-sighted company founded in 1989 that is determined to live up to its name, which means "blossoming for thousands of years".
"We continually upgrade our designs and are known for our vision and sense of what the market needs," claims marketing director Tony Wu. "One of our recent best selling models is a decision-maker clock - simply spin the dial and it answers your questions."
The clock is typical of Man Nin Shing's output, which consists largely of corporate gifts such as watches, radios, stationery and miniature clocks with silver and gold plating.
Materials used in Man Nin Shing's wide range of designs include zinc alloy, aluminium, solid brass, ABS and polycarbonate, as well as stainless steel.
Monthly production at the company's 250-worker mainland factory in Shenzhen varies and minimum order size plus delivery time are both flexible. "We supply corporate gifts to famous companies around the world including the US, Europe, Japan and Korea," notes Wu.
Much of the firm's success is due to its strong emphasis on design, which has seen Man Nin Shing win the Design Award at the Tokyo International Gift Show in 1994.
"We also gained a Hong Kong Trade Development Council Certificate of Merit in Export Marketing in 1999, as well as the Bronze Award and the Excellence Award at the Hong Kong Design Association Show in 2002," adds Wu.
At the end of the day, it's proven designs like this that keep Hong Kong mini table clocks racking up huge sales in major markets around the world.
