Design meets value-added functions in ever-popular digital watches that are both funky and functional. As leading digital timepiece makers, Hong Kong companies have long created LCD watches that are aesthetically appealing and sophisticated while also offering added attractions such as multi choice alarms, calendars, stopwatches and other more complex functions
This subtle combination of elegance, style and easy-to-use functions is the driving force behind Accutime Watch Mfg Co Ltd's digital watches, says Suleman Lakhani, manager of the four-year-old company.
"Accutime is committed to developing an affordable, quality-oriented, brand-name watch that is waterproof and elegant," Lakhani maintains. "All parts are carefully scrutinised before production, and each watch undergoes waterproof testing of up to three atmospheres."
Accutime manufactures a range of watches, under the Perucci, D'gnity, Luccino, Digistar and Accustar brand names, which combine zinc alloy with genuine leather straps or stainless steel or alloy bracelets.
Plastic, alloy, brass and other raw materials are sourced from the Chinese mainland, Taiwan and Japan and production takes place at a three-storey factory employing 150 workers in Weizhou on the mainland.
Each Accutime watch undergoes a rigorous quality control inspection process before shipment to the US, Mexico, the Middle East, Eastern Europe and Southeast Asia.
Accutime's production capacity of 300,000 pieces a month sells for US$3-5 FOB Hong Kong per piece for minimum orders of 500 items delivered one month after receipt of deposit.
Elegant functionality is also a hallmark of seven-year-old Joyful Commerce Co Ltd, which specialises in meeting customer demand by producing digital watches that feature both simple and multifunctions.
"Our watches appeal to those who are looking for a trendy, fashionable watch and also to those who need advanced functions such as sports timing," says marketing executive Irene Wong. "Our basic LCD plastic watches display the time, date and seconds and are available in various colour combinations."
Joyful's multifunction LCD watches also come in different colours and feature EL backlight, chrono alarm, stopwatch function and optional water resistance to 3ATM.
PVC and ABS sourced from the Chinese mainland is processed at plants in Guangdong and Fujian provinces that together employ more than 600 workers and produce more than five million watches per month.
The OEM/ODM company, which also specialises in producing promotional watches for large or small advertising campaigns, markets its products worldwide.
"Customers' logos and designs can be added and the finished product shipped in standard packaging, individual polybags or custom-made gift boxes," adds Wong.
Prices range from US$0.40-2.00 per piece FOB Hong Kong for a minimum order of 3,000 pieces delivered 35 days after confirmation of order.
Chung's Electronic Co Ltd, meanwhile, takes a more hi-tech approach with a line of radio-controlled watches available in either plastic or metallic finishes.
Marketing manager Luisa Kwan says the company's real strength lies in R&D. "We put a great deal of emphasis on designing and developing unique and innovative products," she insists. "Our R&D department plays an important role in our overall success."
Features include automatic switching from summer to winter time, automatic time and date receiving functions (12/24 hour format), manual time setting, available time signal standard, chrono alarm function, dual time (except US version) and EL light.
All watches are water resistant to 3ATM and lithium batteries are included, which helps boost sales in major markets such as Europe, the US and the Asia-Pacific region.
Plastic cases, LCDs and chips are sourced in Japan, Hong Kong and Taiwan for production at a 10,000-square-metre factory employing 600 workers in Shenzhen on the mainland.
Thirteen-year-old Chung's Electronic, which was awarded ISO 9001 certification in 2000, is mainly OEM-oriented and has a production capacity of 500,000-800,000 pieces per month.
Prices begin from about US$8 per piece FOB Hong Kong; with a minimum order quantity of 2,000 items delivered 35 days after order confirmation.
Rugged good looks and solid performance are characteristic of the digital watches produced by 29-year-old Universe Watch Trading Co Ltd, according to marketing manager Eddie Tse.
"We create digital watches that even the most demanding buyers and end users look for," he says. "Our watches are built to perform and last."
For example, all Universe products are water resistant to 5ATM and feature large easy-to-read displays and fashionable hook and loop or heavy-duty plastic bands. "Popular colours are black and navy blue, while there is a growing interest in metallic blue, grey and black," says Tse.
Stainless steel, copper, metal alloys, plastic, aluminium and titanium are sourced on the mainland before being processed at an 88,000-square-foot, 700-worker plant in Shenzhen.
Prices range from US$2-20 FOB Hong Kong and the company requires a minimum order of 100 pieces per colour. The ISO 9002-certified company accepts OEM orders and delivers 45-60 days following order confirmation.
Universe's main markets are the US, Europe and Southeast Asia, with growing sales in Eastern Europe and South America. "We develop new products to meet the demands of our existing markets and actively pursue opportunities to develop new products for new markets," Tse adds.
