York Honour Porcelain Ltd

York Honour Porcelain Ltd makes porcelain kitchenware and tableware for discerning clients in Europe, Japan and North America

A delicate, finely crafted palm-sized teapot, with a set of teacups that stack to form a smiling snowman, is just one of the creative and original designs coming from York Honour Porcelain Ltd, a major manufacturer of porcelain kitchenware and tableware in Hong Kong.

The teaset was designed last year for a Japanese customer. "It is simple and cute, and was a very popular product in Japan, especially as a gift item," says general manager Christine Or. Encouraged by the success of the snowman set, York Honour has designed another - this time as a cuddly bear.

These teasets are from the diverse product lines that York Honour manufactures at a 10,000-square-metre, 250-worker factory in Chaozhou in Guangdong Province, on the Chinese mainland.

Not all of its products are to be found on the retail shelf. Specially manufactured items ranging from tiny cheese picks to 76-cm (30-inch) baking trays can be located on buffet tables in hotels and restaurants, says Or, as she reveals a teeming display of catering products of all kinds, from a cow-shaped and cat-shaped creamer to an olive boat and spoon.

One clever design is an eight-piece porcelain platter set that, once arranged around a circular platter, forms a large flower with petals bent to the right like a propeller.

"This serving set is ideal for a hotel or restaurant buffet table, since you can fill the platters with different items of food," Or says.

Some of the kitchenware items are manufactured for leading brands and even major supermarket chains in the UK.

In addition to kitchenware, the company, established in 1989, makes decorative items in porcelain for festive occasions or as premiums.

"A set of Christmas decorations we made last year for a German customer was in great demand," Or says. The set included Santa Clauses, angels and bells. For a Norwegian client, the company manufactured a polar bear ornament as a giveaway.

York Honour manufactures 10 FEUs each month and exports mainly to Europe, Japan and North America. Almost all items are made according to the designs and specifications provided by buyers.

Each month, 10-15 new items are produced. All raw materials are sourced from the Chinese mainland. A minimum order is one TEU of different items. While there are standard prices for all products, FOB Hong Kong prices are negotiable, Or says, "depending on the size of the order". The bulk of the products are white porcelain. Only a few items, mainly stoneware, are manufactured in different colours.

In addition, there is a limited collection of porcelain products that come with optional accessories such as rattan or fern baskets, or metal stands.

Products are generally promoted by participating in popular trade fairs such as the Hong Kong Houseware Fair organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, and through major trade publications.

York Honour has been improving the quality of its items over the years - a strategy which has seen major buyers reaffirming their faith in the company's products with repeat orders.
