BucklesDetails That Work
Buckles come in an assortment of designs and uses, add value to products and increase convenience. Hong Kong manufacturers lead the charge to produce a wide variety of innovative and high quality buckles. Established in 1978, Cheung Hing Hoo Button Mfy Co Ltd produces a diversified range of buckles in alloy, brass, imitation leather, metal, nylon, polyester and rhinestone. Its strength is especially conspicuous in its custom-made laser logo and pattern technology. "While it is quite common to make laser logos and patterns on plastic products, to do so on metal requires a new technology. We are among the few companies in Hong Kong possessing that ability," says export manager Elaine Yeung. "Customers are welcome to provide the artwork, and we will do the rest," she says. "We have seen an increasing demand for laser logos and patterns on metal buckles in the past two years." Cheung Hing Hoo is ISO 9002-certified and Oeko-Tex-certified to ensure it is making good quality, environmentally friendly buttons, buckles, snaps and rivets. Yeung points out that the company's in-house moulding department also helps facilitate an extensive array of product designs. Monthly production at the company's 200,000-square-foot factory in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland varies from 300,000 to 15 million gross, depending on the product category. Exports go to the US, Europe, Turkey, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Fiji and many parts of Asia, with normal delivery times of 14 days following order confirmation. A minimum order is 100 gross. A company with a best-selling worldwide-patented product is Hing Ngai Co Ltd, established in 1983, which became an invaluable buckle supplier to famous brands of underwear when its automatic brassiere magnetic snap hit the market in 2001. "These newly-invented products overcome the inconvenience of traditional buckles for brassieres as they are equipped with strong magnets. We also have waterproof versions that can be used with swimsuits," says sales manager Carol Wong. "The snaps can be easily buckled as they spontaneously align and match each other. To open, just twist the handles and the snaps will separate," she adds. "As these snaps are very convenient to use, we intend extending their use to other fashion items such as dresses and pants and even various household products such as curtains and bath curtains." The price of the snaps is about US$0.30 per set FOB Hong Kong, produced to custom-made sizes at Hing Ngai's 500-worker, 90,000-square-foot factory in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland. The minimum order is 2,000 pieces, and delivery is usually three days after order confirmation. With more than 20 years' production experience in fashionable magnetic snaps for handbags and garments, both Hing Ngai's waterproof and non-waterproof models are selling briskly on the mainland and in Germany, Italy, Korea, Thailand and the US. Kam Wah Industrial Co Ltd, established in 1983, credits its successful presence in the industry to satisfying customers' needs by exploring new value-added designs. It boasts a large-scale R&D centre specialising in product and mould making. A soon-to-be-released multifunction buckle series from this maker is among several outstanding models. "We strive to continuously add new designs to our product range. For example, we have buckles equipped with compasses and thermometers that make impressive extra features when used with backpacks," says sales manager Jenny Huang. "Other popular models include buckles with safety devices for secure fastening, as well as transparent buckles in fancy colours," she adds. Annual turnover at Kam Wah's 1,500-worker, 30,000-square-metre factory in Fujian Province on the Chinese mainland is HK$100m. The production is to ISO 9002 and Oeko-Tex standards, while FOB Hong Kong prices vary from US$0.70-2.00 per dozen. The minimum order value is US$5,000 and delivery takes place three weeks after confirmation. Operating in Hong Kong since 1965, Wai Sun Button Mfy Ltd employs 400 workers at its 100,000-square-foot factory in Zhongshan on the Chinese mainland. It makes a wide range of 500,000 dozen metal and plastic fashion accessories a month for markets on the mainland, Europe and the US. "Our ISO 9001-certified factory can produce buckles 10 days after order confirmation," says manager Eric Tam, adding that the minimum order size is 50 dozen. "Apart from an effective and competitive management system, our products are all nickel- and azo dye-free," he says. "With our strong experience in the industry, we are able to understand and cater for the preferences of a very broad customer base."
