Novel electronic products that take the hassle out of measuring lap speed or wind conditions are becoming increasingly popular among the gadget-conscious worldwide. Hong Kong manufacturers such as Tandy Electronics (Far East) Ltd are taking full advantage of the burgeoning trend.
Hikers and campers will find plenty of uses for Tandy Electronics' hand-held digital compass, which has a large easy-to-read LCD and 16 directional arrows.
The US$12 FOB Hong Kong unit also measures the temperature, wind chill, wind speed (in miles per hour or kilometres per hour) and has a built-in clock with an alarm function and a removable carrying strap.
The subsidiary of US-based Tandy Corp has also recently developed a device to help golfers play their best under windy conditions. The digital golf caddy, which sells for US$6.50 per piece FOB Hong Kong, measures wind speed from 7-32 miles per hour, indicates wind direction and gives advice on a golfer's swing angle and club size. "It's a very good gift item," declares sales and marketing manager Vickey Yuen.
Minimum order is 1,000 pieces per item, with delivery 60-90 days after order confirmation. The US, Germany and the UK are the main export markets for Tandy, which was established in 1988 and operates a 1,600-worker factory in Huizhou on the Chinese mainland.
Another product making a big splash is Kinger Int'l Ltd's new Laptech Pro for swimmers. "There's nothing like it on the market," claims marketing director May Cheung.
The suction-cupped LCD device is attached to the wall of a pool and allows swimmers to record lap times, speed, distance and calories burned at a touch. "It can be used by amateurs and professionals," she adds, "while seniors like it for water running."
The Laptech Pro sells for US$15 per piece FOB Hong Kong for minimum orders of 1,000 pieces and is being exported to the US and Australia, with plans to also sell to Europe.
For walkers and joggers, the company's clip-on Talking Pedometer with FM radio and earphones features automatic voice announcements on the total number of steps, distance travelled and calories burned.
"The radio function is temporarily suspended during the announcement and when it finishes, the radio comes back on," explains Cheung. "The announcements are in English, but we are looking to add other languages."
The ISO 9000-certified company delivers the Talking Pedometer to Europe, Korea and Japan 30 days after confirmation of a minimum order of 2,000 pieces costing US$5 FOB Hong Kong each.
Taking an entirely different tack is Accuproduct Industrial Ltd, which specialises in digital thermometers and produces about 20 models designed to measure the temperature of things such as food, soil or car radiator water. "The temperature range is from minus -50 to +300 degrees centigrade," explains marketing executive Natasha Wong.
The one-year-old company's mainland factory in Dongguan produces about 100,000 thermometers per month for export to the US, Europe and South America on receipt of a minimum order of 1,000 pieces delivered 30-45 days after order confirmation.
Models such as the waterproof Robust Pen Digital Stem Thermometer have a stainless steel probe, are centigrade/fahrenheit selectable with a minimum/maximum memory and data hold, and boast an optional feature that automatically shuts the power off after 10 minutes.
The EC-certified firm's compact hand-held digital thermometer has similar features; except that the stainless steel probe is attached to the unit by a sensor cord one metre long for added flexibility.
Prices for the thermometers range from US$2.50-6.00 per piece FOB Hong Kong. "The price depends on the order quantity, temperature range and accuracy," Wong explains. "Normally, our accuracy is to within one degree plus or minus, but we can do 0.5 degree, plus or minus."
Not to be outdone, Flying Dragon Development Ltd helps satisfy the needs of campers and lovers of the outdoors with its range of rechargeable lanterns, hand-held multifunction power stations, torches and head lights.
The rechargeable power station, for example, features a radio, spotlight and DC voltage output that is strong enough to power certain appliances or jumpstart a car with a 1500cc engine.
A multifunction lantern that provides 3.6 watts of illumination for seven hours before needing to be recharged also features an AM/FM radio and emergency siren, while another lantern model can be turned on and off with an infrared remote control unit.
The ISO 9000-certified company delivers 45-60 days after confirmation of a US$9,000 minimum order value at prices ranging from US$1.00-12.50 per piece FOB Hong Kong for the lanterns to US$6.40-32.00 for the power station. "The difference in price depends on the number of features and the size," says director Linda Poon.
Obviously, if making life easier and more comfortable is the measure of success when it comes to sports electronics, these gadgets show the competition a clean pair of heels.
