Mighty Mouse Pad

Covered In Silk

SILK has always been considered the ultimate in bedtime luxury and silk blankets are no exception. "These blankets are the result of new silk technology and are exceptionally warm and light," says Ida Cheung, merchandiser for Kai Yuen Co Ltd. Founded in 1991, the company specialises in silk garments. "Scarves are our number one selling item, but we also produce sweaters that incorporate high-technology weaving for famous European designers.

"Although garments are my main line, I am very excited about these silk blankets as they are such a unique product. So far Japan has been our major market for the blankets, as they are more attuned to the benefits of natural fibres. However, I see Europe and North America as the markets for the future," she says.

Cheung considers these blankets ideal for countries where central heating is the norm. "They provide warmth without being heavy, and make ideal wraps when you are sitting around watching TV." She believes this combination of warmth and light weight will also make the blankets popular with the elderly.

The 150x210-centimetre blankets are edged in satin silk and weigh 1.4 kilograms. They come in six soft colours: pink, green, grey, cream, camel and beige. The minimum order is 100 blankets per colour, and delivery takes 45-60 days after confirmation of order.

The blankets can take the customer's brand name or Kai Yuen's own brand name of Nouvelle Silk Link. Cheung is looking to attend some of the European trade shows later this year, as she believes that she has the coming winter season well covered ... in silk, of course.

Mighty Mouse Pad

MULTIMEDIA is the theme of today, especially where computers are concerned, and this trend has even affected the utilitarian mouse pad. The idea for the versatile mouse pad is the brain- child of Danny Chan, director of Dah Sun Calculator Mfg Co Ltd, a specialist in electronic items such as calculators and radios. The mouse pad features an FM stereo radio, slide-out high quality speakers, a drawer for 3-1/2-inch floppy disks, and an easy-access telephone index card system. FOB price is US$8 each.

The pad surface is covered with soft, non-slip EVA that is a pleasure to use, according to Chan. "This is a hot item, and we are currently negotiating with several overseas buyers who have requested sole agencies," he says.

The company, founded in 1985, is part of the larger Dah Sun Group, which has been manufacturing office and security systems for more than 21 years. "I don't tend to publicise this association with the larger group, as I am concerned that it might dissuade the smaller buyer from approaching us. All orders are important to us whether they are big or small," says Chan.

"We produce 50,000 calculators per month, and over half of that business is for our main clients, which are famous entertainment corporations. We have ongoing contracts to produce soft calculators which feature well-known animal characters. We are even exploring the possibility of putting characters on our new mouse pad."

The patented mouse pads are produced in Dah Sun Calculator's factory in Taiping, mainland China. The minimum order is 500 pads, and delivery takes 30 days after confirmation of order. Chan believes that his new version of the mouse pad will not only help relieve congestion in cramped office spaces but also make the office environment more attractive.
