The New Silk Road of Asia’s Film Industry: Challenges, Opportunities and Partnership
China’s “New Silk Road” initiative attempts to redefine the economy landscape of Asia in the 21st century. It certainly applies to Asia’s film industry.
With an annual box office of USD$472 million in 2014, China accounted for 80% of worldwide growth. At USD$56 million for the first day of the 2015 lunar new year, China’s film industry is embarking on a new era being watched by the whole world.
ASEAN, with a population of 600 million and strategically located as the first leg of the “New Silk Road”, will have its markets open up through its ASEAN Economy Community ( AEC ) initiative by end of 2015.
In the meantime, India’s “Bollywood”, Japan’s “J-pop” and Korea’s “K-pop” are already making significant inroads to international markets.
With all these unprecedented developments, Asia’s film industry now faces with both huge opportunities and challenges. How should the industry work together on contents, talent, distribution, production, funding and market opening? At this panel, leaders of Asia’s film industry will share their insights on the future of Asia’s film industry.
