EXHILARATED RECEPTION IN VENICE HIGHLIGHTING HONG KONG PRESENCEMore than 130 film industry players enjoyed an exhilarated reception on 3 September 2010, celebrating Hong Kong's strong presence at this year's Venice Film Festival.

The reception was co-organised by Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), Hong Kong Film Development Council (HKFDC), and Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, Brussels, with Ms WONG Yuet-wah, Deputy Representative of Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, Brussels, Mr Jack SO, Chairman of HKTDC and HKFDC, and Mr John WOO as the guests-of-honour.

EXHILARATED RECEPTION IN VENICE HIGHLIGHTING HONG KONGThe 67th Venice Film Festival took place from 1 to 11 September 2010. TSUI Hark's "Detective Dee and the Mystery of Phantom Flame" was screened in competition for the Golden Lion. Andrew LAU's "Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen" was one of the opening films. Stanley KWAN was nominated as the only Chinese member of the Festival's International Jury and his Shanghai-set youth film "Showtime" also showcased out-of-competition. Once again, Hong Kong cinema's strong presence was highlighted in this significant film event.

MR ROGER GARCIA APPOINTED EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR HONG KONG INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL SOCIETY

The Hong Kong International Film Festival Society (HKIFFS) announced the appointment of Mr Roger Garcia as Executive Director of the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society. Effective from the end of September 2010, Mr Garcia will oversee the strategic growth of the Society including its three flagship events V the Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF), Asian Film Awards (AFA), and the Hong Kong-Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF).

HAF CALLS FOR PROJECT ENTRIES

Hong Kong - Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF) has long been a tremendous success to our filmmakers by bringing projects to completion. It is widely recognised as one of the most important film financing hubs in Asia. We proudly announce that the HAF 2011 is now calling for Project Entries from 6 September 2010 to 12 November 2010.

The details are as follows:
Selection Criteria

  1. Feature film project with an Asian director and/or Asian producer attached
  2. With a high potential of being released and a potential market
  3. With both artistic and commercial qualities
  4. One project only from each director
  5. In all stages of production

HAF AS LEADING FILM-FINANCING HUB IN ASIA

Many HAF alumni projects have been internationally recognized for their artistic and commercial qualities. Recent success stories include:

  • HAFWinter Vacation by LI Hong-qi received Golden Leopard award in Locarno International Film Festival 2010;
  • Mundane History (originally titled The Sparrow) by Anocha SUWICHAKORNPONG won VPRO Tiger Award in International Film Festival Rotterdam 2010;
  • Juliets (originally titled Best Draw) by HOU Chi-Jan, SHEN Ko-Shang and CHEN Yu-Hsun, has been selected as the Opening Film of this year's Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival.

From the commercial perspective, Bodyguards and Assassins by Teddy CHEN reached the top of the Asian box office chart by taking in about 300 millions RMB.

EXPLORING CO-PRODUCTION OPPORTUNITIES AT TIFFCOM

In the upcoming TIFFCOM (the film market in Tokyo in October), HKTDC will organise an industry-sharing seminar followed by a networking cocktail reception in the afternoon of 27 October. The seminar and cocktail reception will be opened to all industry players who are interested in exploring the co-production between Hong Kong and Japan.
