HONG KONG CINEMA SHINES AGAIN AT CANNES

The 62nd Festival de Cannes, which unspools 13th May to 24th May 2009, will once again see a significant Hong Kong presence. Internationally renowned Hong Kong director Johnnie TO is in competition for the Palme D'Or at Cannes with his latest film “Vengeance”. Always glamorous, Hong Kong actress Maggie CHENG plays flawlessly in a cameo role in Quentin TARANTINO’s “Inglourious Basterds”, which is in competition as well.

Three other films by Chinese directors are also among the 20 finalists contending for the top honours. They are:festival

  • “Taking Woodstock” directed by Ang LEE from Taiwan
  • “Visage” (“Face”) directed by TSAI Ming-Liang from Taiwan
  • “Spring Fever” directed by LOU Ye from Chinese Mainland

    Come celebrate Cannes Film Festival with the créme of Hong Kong cinema at the Riviera this May!

    The Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) will once again lead the Hong Kong Pavilion at the Village International for the Marché du Film, the film market to be held concurrently with the Festival de Cannes.

    The Hong Kong Pavilion will provide basic business facilities, such as the Internet, local phone and fax, which will be available to Hong Kong citizens, staff of Hong Kong entertainment companies, accompanied overseas guests, and Hong Kong - Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF) filmmakers.     ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL YEAR FOR ASIA’S WORLD ENTERTAINMENT MARKET

    Congratulations to all the guests of the Asia’s most significant film events for the publicity achieved, deals inked, and friendships made and strengthened.

    Hong Kong International Film & TV Market (FILMART)

    FILMARTOver 500 exhibitors from 28 countries and regions (soared by 4.6% compared with the previous edition) and more than 4,500 visitors from 50 countries and regions (rocketed by 7.3% compared with 2008) attended FILMART this year, participating in spectacular programmes including numerous premieres, networking events, conferences, awards presentation, exhibitors’ press conferences, as well as more than 240 market screenings.

    Hong Kong – Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF)

    HAFThis year, approximately 1,000 participants from 35 countries and regions attended the HAF. Close to 500 private meetings were organized between financiers and filmmakers of the 27 selected film projects.

    Asian Film Awards (AFA)

    AFAA total of 13 prizes were given out at the 3rd AFA in a star-studded ceremony presided over by masters of ceremony Terence Yin, Lisa S and Derek Li, and featuring honoured guests like Joan Chen, Brigitte Lin Ching-hsia, Academy Award-winner Oliver Stone and AFA Jury President Michelle Yeoh.

    Hong Kong International Film & Festival (HKIFF)

    HKIFFThe 33rd HKIFF hosted 338 films from 50 countries and regions, which included 19 World Premieres, 17 International Premieres and 33 Asian Premieres. With over half a million festival-goers, festival ticket sales and attendance figures saw successful increases, leading to 136 sold-out screenings, a 12% increase from the last edition. Audiences were treated to a record final tally of 122 Meet-the-Audience sessions, an astounding 84% increase.
