Hong Kong Cinema Shines in Cannes Spotlight

The 60th Anniversary of Festival de Cannes has successfully concluded, and Hong Kong has definitely made a splash there! Internationally acclaimed Hong Kong director Wong Kar Wai enters the history book by becoming the first Chinese director to have an opening film at the Cannes festival. My Blueberry Nights, Wong¡¦s first English-language film, stars Jude Law and Norah Jones, who appeared on the Croisette for its world premiere.

Many stars, such as Maggie Cheung, Gong Li, Michelle Yeoh, Shu Qi and Chang Chen were spotted on the red carpet at Cannes.

On 18 May, more than a thousand filmmakers, distributors and media from across the globe attended the ceremony for the 60th Festival de Cannes Anniversary Exhibition: STARWAY, Allˆme de Stars. After the inauguration, a cocktail reception for Hong Kong films took place.

Mr. Henry Tang, Financial Secretary of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Mr. Gilles Jacob, President of the Festival de Cannes; and Mr. Fred Lam, Executive Director of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, officiated the event. Ms Maggie Cheung, Ms. Shu Qi, Mr. Simon Yam, Mr. Louis Koo, and directors Johnnie To, Ringo Lam and Tsui Hark were some of the important guests that attended the reception.

Hong Kong film business activities strive at the Pavilion

The Hong Kong Pavilion, located at the Village International, served as a business and media centre for Hong Kong delegates with necessary facilities, as well as a place where Hong Kong filmmakers could meet with overseas counterparts and built relationship with the international media. The Pavilion experienced the busy buzzing of the Cannes Film Festival as it became the centre stage for interviews and activities.

Fourteen companies from Hong Kong were present at the Cannes Film Market this year, with many managing to complete sales and acquisitions during the market period. Many deals that were completed at Cannes were from discussions began from FILMART.

HAF Filmmakers take part in Producers Network

HAF also featured prominently at Cannes this year, with many of HAF 2007's filmmakers participating in Producers' Network, Cannes' networking event to promote international production opportunities. HAF 2007 producers, including Sue Maslin, Manas Malhotra, Peng Shan, Julien Favre, Lorna Tee, Samuel Choy, and Leah Churchill-Brown were amongst the 400 acclaimed producers selected to take part this year. Congratulations to HAF 2007 project, "Blown by the Typhoon", directed by YING Liang which was selected as a part of the L'Atelier, organized by the Cannes' Cinefondation.
