ASIAN FINANCIAL FORUM - 18-19 January 2016, Hong Kong convention and Exhibition Centre
Asia: Shaping the New Paradigm for Growth
Influential members of the global financial and business communities will gather at the ninth Asian Financial Forum (AFF) 2016 to examine opportunities and challenges facing the global economy. Close to 90 distinguished speakers will exchange insights with over 2,600 participants from across the world on policy directions, global growth and investment outlook, Belt and Road Initiative, developments in the Chinese and Asian economies, as well as Chinese outbound investment.

A host of thematic sessions will also be arranged to discuss topical issues in global finance and business:
Sponsored by:
Breakfast Panel on Hong Kong: Your Super-Connector to the Belt and Road Initiative
China’s Belt and Road Initiative will strengthen economic cooperation in the vast regions of Asia, Africa and Europe. This transformational development will open up a wealth of opportunities for a great number of countries and regions.

Hong Kong, as a “super-connector” between the Mainland and the rest of the world, can play a substantial role in the Belt-Road initiative. More specifically, Hong Kong is well positioned to provide Mainland enterprises that are “going global” with financial and other professional services to support their international investment, Renminbi cross-border trade settlement and financing activities, as well as risk management.

In this session, a panel of industry experts will explore the opportunities arising from the Belt-Road initiative along with what Hong Kong has to offer to businesses, investors and financial institutions that aspire to fully leverage the initiative.

Co-organised by:
Panel Discussion on Business Innovation and Disruption: Big Data, Fintech and E-commerce
Advancements in mobile technology and sprawling e-commerce platforms have drastically altered the operational landscape of almost all business sectors including financial services, affecting both front-end and back-end, and demanding commensurate changes which span the creation, storage, security, search, sharing and analytics of an enormous vast amount of data. This panel will discuss whether fin-tech and e-commerce solutions being adopted or proposed at corporate and industry levels are the proper and timely responses to the challenge and requirement for business innovations.

RMB Internationalisation and Corporate Treasury
In the 13th Five Year plans, the Chinese government reaffirmed its determination to move towards greater RMB capital account convertibility and pledge to push forward the 'Belt and Road' initiative. It has also reaffirmed its support for Hong Kong to strengthen its role as a global RMB hub. Driven by the growing importance of the China market, Mainland and global corporates will continue to expand their business operations and have a greater demand for RMB as a currency for trade transactions. The business expansion in multiple jurisdictions and complex risk environment in the Belt and Road countries will also call for centralized treasury management.

As the premier offshore RMB centre with proximity to China, Hong Kong has the natural advantages to attract these companies to set up their corporate treasury centres in the city, in turn deepening the offshore RMB capital markets. This workshop will explore how Hong Kong would continue to play a crucial role in supporting RMB internationalisation, as well as enhancing its competitive edge to develop into a preferred location for corporate treasury centres.

Year Ahead 2016
2015 has been a challenging year for financial markets. Investors have taken a more pessimistic view of global economic data, in part due to concerns about growth in China and emerging markets. The strengthening of the dollar, and large swings in commodity prices didn't help either. More specifically in Asia, many feared a repeat of 1997's Asian Financial Crisis as the region's currencies crumbled in the third quarter, dragging equity and bond markets along with it. Is China able to manage its slowdown amid its economic transformation? Will Asia's reform roadmap materialize as it should? Can the region's equities and currencies make a comeback? Investors have feasted for long on the low interest rate and accommodating monetary policy environment by pouring into risky assets. But with the Fed on the cusp of rising rates, does this mean the end is nigh for the risky assets boom? Find out more about UBS CIO's views on this world in transition and how investors can maneuver the uncertainties set to define 2016.

Global Trade, Investment, and the Renminbi:
Canada’s Growing Importance as North America’s Financial Services Gateway to and from Asia

Amid shifting patterns of global trade and investment flows from emerging Asian markets, and China in particular, global risk and adherence to strict compliance regimes are also on the rise. The need for reliable, predictable and stable financial gateways for these new global market flows has never been greater. Such trends are rapidly growing Canada’s prominence as a safe and competitive jurisdiction as a nexus for Asian financial flows with North America, with an internationally competitive tax regime, the soundest banking system in the world, designation as the only North American RMB settlement hub, and a globally strategic time zone location between Europe and Asia. Panelists will offer views on how Canada’s international financial services are positioned to serve as crucial connectors between London and Hong Kong, as well as Buenos Aires and Beijing.

Shifting Supply Chains in Asia?
Manufacturers are increasingly exploring whether to set up production bases in new areas such as Vietnam and Bangladesh to diversify risk and adjust to higher costs for labor and other inputs in China. Other manufacturers are adjusting to tightened labor markets by increasing investment in automation. Recent instability in exchange rates around Asia and new regional trade agreements are adding further complexity to corporate calculations. This session will look at the trends that are shifting supply chains around the region.

China’s G20 and Global Financial Governance
As the host of the G20 in 2016, how will China take this opportunity to assume a leadership position commensurate with its economic power to lead the global community in establishing the 4 I’s (innovation, invigoration, interconnectivity, inclusiveness) as the pillars for addressing the issues of global growth and governance, leading the way to achieving sustainable and balanced growth as well as a reformed global financial market infrastructure.

Leading Asia: Women as Change Agents, Innovators and Entrepreneurs
A recent United Nations report states that limits on women’s participation in the workforce across the Asia-Pacific region cost an estimated US$90 billion every year. Despite the fast economic developments in China and many emerging economies in Asia, the full potential of women’s contribution to the society remains untapped. Women’s participation and leadership are imperative for competitiveness and success in the private and public sectors. How should the society enable women as change agents, innovators, entrepreneurs and leaders? What should we do to capitalize on and realize the “Women Divide”?

At this panel we will listen to success stories of Asia woman leaders and entrepreneurs from the financial, cultural, creative and other strategic sectors. They will share their lessons and recommendations for women to take ownership of their lives and in turn energize the society.
